The mystery of the one-issue voter

By

Have you ever been baffled by a voter who only focuses on one single issue? There are several members of my extended family and acquaintances that only focus on one issue. Here are the top issues: Gun Control, Abortion, Deficit, and Border Security. Now let’s consider the 10,000 variables or more that politicians have to think about. Does that one issue really matter in the scheme of running an entire country?

What on earth is this voter/person thinking. Are they really that selfish or ignorant? Why yes, yes they are. I will use the gun loving members of my extended family. I have heard for years how the liberals want to take their guns away. “Guns don’t kill people, People kill people.” That is the rationalization that I hear all of the time. Or, “It’s my God given right to have a weapon and the Constitution, says so.” I laugh at these binary statements. The constitution is as only as good as the purveyors we elect. Liberals don’t want to take any freedoms away. They simply want to regulate or balance the equation regarding gun safety. It is a response to mass shootings and mentally ill individuals getting a hold of weapons. Republicans on the other hand don’t want any regulation to get in the way of their goals of profiting off the public (this includes the Constitution.) This bait and switch tactic by the republicans convinces the binary thinkers that we shall save your weapons but we will strip everything you need in your red states to enrich ourselves (The Republican tax plan and the Musk Space Piracy of the US Government.)

Single mindedness only creates more problems. Another family member claimed that $47’s faith and disdain for abortion aligned with theirs. Again single mindedness. Binary thinking. $47’s faith is in the plundering of wealth from the American people. He uses religion as a weapon against them. He is a false prophet of hope, while he strips half the populations autonomy over their own bodies. This banning abortion sure makes this family member happy, but when they lose their medicare/medicaid how are they going to feel? How is that tax rate going to feel? By focusing on one issue you leave all of these other variables to chance… That is ignorance…

The deficit is an interesting one. The Republicans have you convinced that they are the economically and fiscally responsible party. Yet every research document over the last 40 years has shown this premise is false. Yet, a binary voter is rationalizing it is true by saying there is waste, waste, waste. The deficit has generally grown more during Republican controlled congresses and presidencies. Income gaps have also grown during Republican presidencies. Privatization of government takes more discretionary spending each year that Defense is now 52-55% of that portion of the budget. Why? Tax cuts. Republicans continue to drain the income stream to pay for their spending. The newest proposal calls for an increase of $4 trillion on the debt ceiling, a decrease of $2 trillion in spending with a tax cut of $2.5 trillion. Even if you cut $2 trillion, you have $500B going towards deficit and all of $47’s deportations are costing billions, the Gaza thing will cost trillions, and the economy (business tax dollars) is going to plummet due to the tariffs. The Republicans simply want to spend and make the government default for corporate takeover. Economics and deficits of a government that operates in the trillions of dollars requires a bit more than binary thinking. Tax the rich appropriately and we could actually pay down the deficit. Eliminate private services and we could fund Medicare for All and save a trillion in the first ten years… This is a massive algebra problem, not an addition problem…

Border security Oh my… I’ve heard every argument of why Vice President Kamala Harris wasn’t qualified to be president because she didn’t want the border secured. Binary thinking at work again. Harris was more than qualified for the job, you just didn’t want any other option in play other than the one bias you have against Hispanic/Latin Americans. Harris wanted to treat these people as people. The unilateral bias of binary thinking is rationalized entirely on xenophobia and religion. Have any of the illegal aliens been personally responsible for taking your job? Have they prevented you from living a life as you wish? Are these folks raising the cost of living for you? No, No, and no. Are there felons in this group of people? Probably a few, but how are these few causing you to lump the rest as criminals. Why are you demeaning a whole population? So much so, that religious leaders around the world are calling you out… but you stick to that passive-aggressive racism… BTW, most of the Hispanic/Latin American immigrants are Catholic and they are simply seeking a better way to live… …just like the rest of us… I call out the binary thinker on border security as a passive-aggressive racist… These illegal immigrants are far better Christians than they might ever be…

Nothing in this world is as simple as black/white, right/wrong, left/right. There are thousands of variables at play. Governing a country is a difficult task. One must be aware of all the variables. One must be flexible and pragmatic when trying to solve problems of great difficulty. Being a single issue voter has ushered in a 40 year reign of selfishness within the American government. Religion has played a significant role in this pattern of behavior. Frank Zappa saw this coming during the Reagan administration. Devout conservatives denied it. $47 is at the cusp of creating an oligarchic theocracy with his buddies Space Pirate and Bad Catholic Christian Nationalist. Conservative one issue voters are still denying it. The ignorance and simple mindedness of this will end up biting all of us in the ass. It will be painful, forever. This is why I feel sorry for the conservative binary thinker. I pity them. I dissent for them, yet they dig those heels in deeper and deeper not realizing they are being buried by their own ignorance. I wonder when they will wake up? …and so it goes…
